The Brick Basilica of St. Georgen, along with St. Mary's and St. Nicholas', is one of the three monumental Gothic sacred buildings in Wismar's historic Old Town. With construction beginning around 1295, St. George's Church is the largest church in the city in terms of volume and enclosed space. After the Gothic beauty was a ruin due to war and storm damage until 1989, it has been shining in new splendor since 2010, following extensive renovation.
The lighting concept is very modern; monumental rings with an anthracite-grey finely structured surface harmonize with the wonderful, authentic brick surfaces of the building. The rings are placed on several levels and, in combination with a tall spiral staircase and a futuristic glass and steel elevator, form a modern, contrasting unit in the medieval space.
