Osnabrück Cathedral (St. Petrus)

Osnabrück Cathedral is an impressive late Romanesque building of great cultural and historical significance. More than 20 years ago, we were commissioned to develop an initial lighting concept for this unique church interior and to manufacture the luminaires. As part of a comprehensive renovation of the electrical and lighting systems, we have now been entrusted once again with modernizing the lighting.

The nave was originally illuminated by pendant lights in the arches and spotlights on the capitals, which gently brightened the ceiling. We carefully cleaned our original pendant lights, converted them to modern LED technology, and completely rewired them. The old spotlights were replaced with energy-efficient LED variants. Additionally, downlights were installed on the capitals to ensure more uniform illumination of the seating rows in the nave.

The side aisle is illuminated partly by the pendant lights and partly by targeted vault uplighting. The pendant lights emphasize the rhythmic structure of the arches. In the choir and altar area, discreetly integrated spotlights provide accentuated lighting at liturgically important locations. The simple, semi-hidden luminaires blend discreetly into the architecture but achieve a powerful lighting effect. This brings the pendant lights into focus and harmonizes ideally with the sacred and Romanesque design language of the cathedral.

The lighting in the cloister was also converted to modern LED technology. This renovation not only significantly improved the quality of light but also considerably reduced energy consumption. The cathedral now shines with a new lighting effect that uniquely combines functionality, aesthetics, and respect for the historic space.
