The Frauenkirche in Munich (officially the Cathedral of Our Lady) is not only a landmark of the city, but of all of Germany. With a length of over 100 meters and a room height of 35 meters, the late Gothic building is an impressive architectural achievement.

The finely decorated, historicizing luminaires are a special feature of the church and contribute to the spiritual atmosphere. Therefore, it was important to preserve this appearance. It was important to us not only to meet the requirements of reading light, but also to let the luminaires themselves shine and integrate them into the architecture. Following Richard Kelly's principles of light design – light to see, light to look at, and light to look upon – we combined these elements in the luminaires.

The existing housings of the downlights were replaced with simple cylindrical housings with heat sinks and the illuminants with LEDs in combination with lenses. The arrangement of the downlights and the possibility of rotation and pivoting ensured a pleasant, uniform reading light. This arrangement, which is based on the shape of the luminaire, minimizes shadowing on the floor. The overall shape of the luminaire is recognizable again through the brightening of the room lights, which also brighten the walls.

The elaborate restoration and modernization of the lighting in the Liebfrauenkirche is an outstanding example of how historical architecture can be harmoniously combined with modern technology. Every step of the project was carefully planned and executed to ensure that the aesthetic and spiritual atmosphere of the sacred space is preserved. Special attention was paid to the selection of illuminants to ensure a warm and inviting light quality that corresponds to the original character of the church.
