Jerusalem, Dormition Abbey

Following the renovation of the Dormition Abbey Church, Christoph Münks and Hans Simon developed a circular chandelier approximately 7 meters in diameter. Together, we sought a solution to integrate the lights as discreetly as possible, without detracting from the overall appearance of the artwork. This special circular chandelier was meticulously forged and gold-leafed by master craftsmen.

Twelve square housings were designed to blend harmoniously into the circular chandelier, without impairing the delicate craftsmanship. Each insert contains a downlight for general illumination and an uplight to brighten the historic dome. By strategically placing the downlights and uplights, we were able to create even and atmospheric lighting that highlights the beauty of the painted ceiling and emphasizes the architectural details of the dome. The color-dynamic control of the luminaires allows the congregation to flexibly adjust the light to different occasions and moods, whether for services, special ceremonies, or cultural events. This subtle yet effective lighting design helps to preserve and enhance the spiritual atmosphere of the abbey.

Collaboration with the metalworkers and the community was crucial for the project's success. Through regular consultations and joint planning, we ensured that all requirements and wishes were taken into account. This project is an impressive example of how modern lighting technology and historical architecture can be harmonized.
