Emden, St. Michael

Starting in August 2024, the Catholic parish church of St. Michael in Emden underwent extensive renovation: on the soft ground typical of the region, one side aisle had subsided, visible in cracks running through the walls and arches. As part of the renovation, the church's technical infrastructure was also fundamentally renewed - including the entire lighting.

For this concept, we worked closely with those responsible on site. At its centre is our Phase pendant luminaire with a slotted side: the slot directs light precisely along the architecture. Clean lines and bright surfaces regain their contour - warm and inviting.

This is complemented by coloured liturgical side lighting that can be controlled independently of the base lighting. In the side aisle, solo pendant luminaires provide additional accents, while in the chancel, our accent spotlights put the liturgical focal point in the spotlight.

What fascinated us most about this project: how much the same space changes through colour temperature alone. Warm white light lends the vault a dignified, solemn feel — evoking mass, weddings, a sense of shelter. Blue-violet tones transform the very same space into an entirely different atmosphere: charged, energetic, with new depth. The vault, the walls, the architecture stay exactly the same - only one single parameter changes, and the space tells a different story.
